of flesh and terra (2025)
of flesh and terra is a set of letters that weave the poetic with the discursive. in these letters, i use my voice, but also the imagined perspectives and voices of a great-great-grandmother and of the terra (soil) i collected in the places this ancestor inhibited. of flesh and terra describes a search for psychological belonging motivated by a discovery of genetic belonging.
i construct memories and imagine remembrance and, while doing so, ponder on ideas of belonging and on the roles of memory and imagination in the state of being in. i also reflect on the phenomenological possibilities afforded by being and feeling with matter and on the roles of images and image-making in the construction of the sense of belonging. in of flesh and terra, i borrow knowledge from new materialism, cognitive psychology and neuroscience, and visual studies. i also appropriate pieces of portuguese oral tradition and poetry.
of flesh and terra was selected for the matter does matter exhibition at the royal academy of art the hague and to be available at TENT rotterdam during the exhibition out of place with wasteland collective.
